Following Hayes’ dismissal in 1978, Earle Bruce and later John Cooper coached the team to a combined seven conference championships between them.

He was a two-time team captain for coach Urban Meyer at Florida one of only eight two-time captains in Florida history and lettered three times while playing in 41 games and starting 26 times at linebacker. Stamper was a member of Florida’s national championship teams in 2006 and 2008 and he led the Gators in tackles as a senior while earning second-team all SEC honors.
